The School of Humanities and Communication of Ningbo University (NBU),composed of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the Department of History, the Department of Journalism and Communication and the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, has a long history. It started with the Department of Chinese Language and Literature being established in 1956 under the Ningbo Teachers College. In March 1996, approved by Zhejiang Provincial Government, the former NBU, Ningbo Teachers College, and Zhejiang Fisheries College at Ningbo merged into a new university still bearing the title of Ningbo University. Hence, the Department of Chinese and the Department of History from Ningbo Teachers College became a part of NBU. In May 2000, the Chinese Department and the History Department were renamed as the School of Humanities. In 2009, the School of Humanities and Communication was established. For the present, the School has 110 staff members, among whom 22are professors, 35are associate professors, and 81 hold doctoral degrees. Of the honorable titles, the School has 6 “Young and Middle-aged Subject Leading Figures of Zhejiang Higher Education”. At the undergraduate level, the School currently has five specialties, namely: Chinese language and literature, Chinese language and literature for teacher-training, history, journalism and advertising. The School attaches great importance to discipline construction and academic research, and has achieved fruitful scientific research results. We are proud to display some statistics here. In recent years, our staff members have been in charge of more than 20 National Social Science Fund Projects (among them, 2 Major Projects and 2 Key Projects) , 18 Chinese Education Ministry Social Science and Humanity Projects, and 33 social science projects at the provincial level. Also, our teachers have published 118 academic works, and have received more than 10 Zhejiang Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Outstanding Research awards. Aiming at the target of internationalization of education, we will focus our work more on supporting talents and developing disciplines, and strive to send more and more high-quality graduates and undergraduates to all over the country.
